How to get cited in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

How Google AI Overviews and AI Mode choose the pages they cite, and the practical steps to earn citations: rankings, answer-first structure, topical depth and schema.

Key takeaways

  • AI Overviews are built from Google's normal search index, so pages that already rank well are the most likely to be cited.
  • Put clear, direct answers near the top of the page, then cover follow-up questions in depth.
  • AI Mode breaks one question into many sub-questions, so topical depth matters more than ever.
  • Google-Extended does not control AI Overviews; it only affects Gemini training and grounding.

AI Overviews now appear above the normal results for many searches, and AI Mode turns a search into a conversation. For publishers and stores, the question has shifted from "how do I rank first?" to "how do I become one of the sources Google quotes?" The good news: Google picks those sources from pages it already trusts, so solid SEO is still the foundation.

How AI Overviews choose sources

When Google decides to show an AI Overview, its model writes a summary and links to supporting pages. Those pages come from Google's normal index, crawled by Googlebot, and they tend to be pages that already rank well for the query or closely related ones. AI Mode goes further: it runs many related searches on the user's behalf (Google calls this query fan-out) and pulls from pages that answer each sub-question.

A simplified AI Overview. The summary quotes a few pages, and the cited sources sit above the normal results.

Step 1: Rank in the first place

Most AI Overview citations come from pages with good organic rankings. If you're on page three, start with the basics: technical SEO, relevant content, internal links and authority. There's no AI shortcut around weak SEO.

Step 2: Put answers where Google can extract them

  • Answer the main question in the first 40 to 60 words of the section.
  • Use question-style subheadings when they match real searches.
  • Use lists for steps, and tables for comparisons and specifications.
  • Keep each section self-contained, so it makes sense if quoted on its own.

Step 3: Cover the follow-up questions

AI Mode's fan-out means one page rarely answers everything. Build clusters: a main guide plus supporting pages for each common follow-up, all linked together. This is exactly what topical and semantic SEO is for.

Mapping AI Mode's fan-out

You can approximate the sub-questions AI Mode asks by collecting People Also Ask questions, related searches and the follow-ups AI Mode suggests for your main topic. Map each one to a page:

  • Costs and pricing
  • Step-by-step how-to
  • Tools compared
  • Common mistakes
  • Examples and templates
  • Local or industry specifics

Step 4: Use structured data that matches the page

Google says no special markup is needed to appear in AI features, but structured data still helps it understand products, organisations, reviews and events. Keep schema accurate and identical to what's visible. Mismatched or misleading markup can hurt more than help. See my schema markup service.

Step 5: Show real experience

AI Overviews favour content that demonstrates first-hand experience and expertise: original photos, real data, named authors with credentials, and specific advice. Generic content that restates what everyone else says has little reason to be cited.

Step 6: Protect your clicks

When the answer appears on Google itself, fewer people click. Give them a reason to:

  • Offer what a summary can't: tools, calculators, detailed comparisons, prices, downloads.
  • Write titles that promise depth beyond the summary.
  • Make your brand memorable so people search for you directly next time.

What I check in an AI Overview audit

For each priority keyword, I record four things in a sheet: whether an AI Overview appears, which domains it cites, whether our page ranks in the top ten, and which passage on the cited pages appears to be quoted. Patterns appear quickly. Cited passages are usually short, direct definitions or lists placed under a clear heading, and the cited pages almost always rank on page one already. That tells you where to focus: rankings first, then answer formatting on the pages that already rank.

What about opting out?

You can limit how much of your content appears in snippets with nosnippet or max-snippet, but that also limits your normal search listing. Blocking Google-Extended doesn't remove you from AI Overviews. For most businesses, being cited is the better goal.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need special markup to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google says normal SEO best practices apply. Accurate structured data helps Google understand your content but isn't required.

Do AI Overviews reduce traffic?

For some informational searches, yes. Being cited softens the impact and builds brand recognition, and commercial searches still drive clicks.

How do I track AI Overview citations?

Several rank trackers now report AI Overview presence and citations. Pair that with Search Console data for the affected queries.
