How to rank in ChatGPT: a step-by-step ChatGPT SEO guide

A practical ChatGPT SEO guide: how ChatGPT search finds and cites websites, the crawlers to allow, how to structure pages, and how to track your brand's mentions.

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT answers either from what its model learned in training or by searching the web and citing sources.
  • Allow OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User, keep your pages indexed in Bing, and fix anything that blocks crawlers.
  • Write answer-first pages with specific facts, and earn mentions on the review sites, forums and publications ChatGPT cites.
  • Track a fixed list of buyer prompts every month to see whether you're mentioned, cited or recommended.

ChatGPT is now one of the first places people go to research a purchase. "Which CRM is best for a 10-person team?" "Where can I buy authentic oud perfume in Dubai?" If ChatGPT doesn't mention you, a growing share of buyers will never see you. This guide covers what I do for clients to change that.

How ChatGPT decides which brands to mention

ChatGPT has two ways of answering.

  1. From memory. The model learned from a large body of text before its training cut-off. If your brand was described often and consistently, it can mention you without searching.
  2. With search. For questions about products, recent events or local businesses, ChatGPT often searches the web, reads several pages and writes an answer with linked citations.

For most businesses, the second path is where you can make progress quickly, because it reflects your website and reputation today rather than months ago.

Step 1: Make sure ChatGPT can reach your site

OpenAI uses three user agents:

CrawlerWhat it doesRecommendation
OAI-SearchBotFinds and indexes pages for ChatGPT searchAllow
ChatGPT-UserOpens pages when a user or GPT asks it toAllow
GPTBotCollects data that may train future modelsYour choice
robots.txt
# Let ChatGPT search find and cite pages
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

# Let ChatGPT open pages users ask about
User-agent: ChatGPT-User
Allow: /

# Opt out of training (optional)
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xml
A robots.txt that keeps you in ChatGPT search while opting out of model training. Adjust the GPTBot line to your own policy.

Blocking GPTBot does not remove you from ChatGPT search. Blocking OAI-SearchBot does. Check three places: your robots.txt, your CDN or firewall bot rules (Cloudflare's "block AI bots" setting is a common culprit), and any security plugin on WordPress or app on Shopify.

ChatGPT search has historically drawn on Bing's index alongside its own crawling, so verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap and fix any indexing errors there.

Step 2: Write pages ChatGPT can quote

When ChatGPT reads your page, it looks for a passage that directly answers the question. Help it:

  • Answer in the first two sentences. Then explain.
  • Use specific facts. Prices, sizes, delivery times, locations, model numbers and dates are far more quotable than "high quality" and "great service".
  • One idea per section. Clear H2 and H3 headings, short paragraphs, and lists or tables for comparisons.
  • Name things consistently. Use the same product and brand names everywhere, so the model connects them.

A product page for a perfume, for example, should state the notes, concentration, size, price and who it suits in plain text, not only in images.

Before and after: an answer-first rewrite

Before

  • "Discover our luxurious signature fragrance, crafted for the modern gentleman."
  • No price or size in text
  • Longevity implied by "long-lasting"
  • Who it's for left to the imagination

After

  • "Oud Nuit is an extrait de parfum (25% oil) with oud, saffron and rose."
  • "AED 650 for 100ml, delivered across the UAE in 1–2 days."
  • "Lasts 8–10 hours on skin; strongest in the first three hours."
  • "Best for evenings and cooler months; popular as a wedding gift."
The same product section, rewritten so ChatGPT can lift a complete, specific answer.

The product and numbers above are an illustrative example. The principle is what matters: every claim ChatGPT might repeat should be stated plainly, once, in text.

Step 3: Be talked about where ChatGPT looks

When ChatGPT searches, the pages it cites are often not brand websites. They're comparison articles, "best of" lists, review sites, Reddit threads and news coverage. If your competitors appear in those sources and you don't, ChatGPT will recommend them.

What works:

  1. Get into the comparisons. Find the articles ChatGPT cites for your key prompts and reach out to be included, with real reasons.
  2. Earn reviews. Encourage genuine customer reviews on Google, Trustpilot and the platforms your industry uses.
  3. Participate honestly in communities. Helpful, transparent answers on Reddit and forums build the kind of mentions AI tools trust.
  4. Do digital PR. Data, expert comments and stories that earn coverage from publications in your niche.

This is the same work that builds links and authority for Google, which is why ChatGPT SEO and classic SEO support each other.

Step 4: Add structured data and entity signals

Structured data won't force a mention, but it removes ambiguity. Add Organization schema with your logo, contact details and sameAs links to your social profiles. Add Product, LocalBusiness or Service schema where it fits, and keep it consistent with what's visible on the page. My schema markup service covers this end to end.

Step 5: Track prompts, not just traffic

Rankings don't exist in ChatGPT in the usual sense, so track prompts:

  1. Write 20 to 50 prompts your buyers would ask, mixing brand, category and comparison questions.
  2. Run them monthly, in a logged-out or fresh session to reduce personalisation.
  3. Record: mentioned (yes/no), cited with a link (yes/no), position in the answer, and competitors named.
  4. Watch referral traffic from chatgpt.com in GA4. Create a channel group for AI assistants so it isn't lost in "referral".

Finding the sources ChatGPT trusts in your niche

This is the most useful exercise I run for clients, and you can do it in an afternoon:

  1. Run your ten most valuable prompts in ChatGPT with search on.
  2. Copy every cited URL into a sheet.
  3. Group them: your site, competitor sites, review platforms, communities, publications.
  4. Count which domains appear most often across prompts.

The domains that appear three or more times are your priority list. Getting your brand accurately represented on those pages, through genuine reviews, corrections, outreach or contributed expertise, usually moves ChatGPT visibility faster than anything you change on your own website.

A quick ChatGPT SEO checklist

  • OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User allowed in robots.txt and the CDN
  • Site verified in Bing Webmaster Tools with a clean sitemap
  • Answer-first intros on your key pages
  • Specific, quotable facts in text, not only images
  • Organization schema with sameAs links
  • Presence in the top comparison articles for your category
  • Steady flow of genuine reviews
  • Monthly prompt tracking and an AI referral channel in analytics

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT use Google search results?

ChatGPT search uses OpenAI's own crawler plus third-party search providers, historically including Bing. Being well indexed in Bing is a sensible baseline, alongside Google.

Should I block GPTBot to protect my content?

That's a business decision. Blocking GPTBot keeps your content out of future training data but doesn't remove you from ChatGPT search, which uses OAI-SearchBot.

How quickly can I appear in ChatGPT answers?

Search-based answers can change within weeks of fixing crawl access, content and mentions. Answers from the model's memory change only when the model is updated.
