Why Open Graph tags matter

When someone shares your page, the app builds a preview from your Open Graph tags. Without them it guesses, often picking a logo, a cookie banner or no image at all. A good preview gets more clicks from every share, and more shares.

Quick fixes for common problems

  1. Missing og:image: add a 1200 by 630 pixel image for each important page.
  2. Same title on every page: write a unique title for each page, with the main topic first.
  3. No canonical: add a self-referencing canonical to every indexable page.
  4. A stray noindex: remove it from pages you want in search, especially after moving from a staging site.

Questions people ask

Why does WhatsApp show an old preview after I changed my tags?

WhatsApp and other apps cache previews. Facebook's Sharing Debugger can refresh it for Facebook; others update over time.

Do Open Graph tags affect Google rankings?

Not directly. They affect how shared links look, which affects clicks and traffic.

What size should og:image be?

1200 by 630 pixels works well across WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Facebook and X.
