Redirect chains

A chain is a redirect that leads to another redirect, like http to https to www to the final page. Each hop adds delay and wastes crawl budget, and Google stops following after several hops. Point links and redirects straight to the final URL.

When to check redirects

  1. After a migration or redesign, for your top pages and old URLs.
  2. After changing domains, http to https, or www to non-www.
  3. When rankings drop for a page that used to perform.
  4. Before launching ads, so paid clicks don't bounce through slow chains.

Questions people ask

Is a 302 redirect bad for SEO?

Not always, but for permanent moves use a 301 or 308. Google treats long-lived 302s as permanent eventually, but it's slower and less predictable.

How many redirects are too many?

Aim for one at most. Google follows up to ten hops, but each one costs time and crawl budget.

Does this checker follow JavaScript or meta refresh redirects?

It follows HTTP redirects, which are the ones that matter most for SEO. JavaScript and meta refresh redirects aren't followed.
